Crowns
A dental crown is a cap that covers the entire visible part of your tooth. If a tooth is damaged dramatically by fracture or decay, it may be necessary to place a porcelain crown around it to protect it from additional damage and restore it to its normal size and shape. We use this procedure conservatively if a simple filling is not adequate to address the issues. Crowns can also protect teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, hold dental bridges in place, or cover dental implants.
What's the Process?
The procedure of getting a dental crown usually involves two visits to the dentist’s office. During the first visit, your dentist will examine and prepare the tooth that needs the crown. They will remove any decay or damage, and shape the tooth to fit the crown. They will also take an impression of your tooth and the surrounding teeth, and send it to a dental laboratory where the crown will be made. In the meantime, they will place a temporary crown over your tooth to protect it until the permanent crown is ready.
During the second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. They will make any necessary adjustments and cement the crown onto your tooth. They will also give you instructions on how to care for your new crown and maintain good oral hygiene.
